Emulsify, disperse and homogenize in one pass

A sanitary high-shear mixer is an inline rotor-stator pump. A high-speed rotor drives product through the fine slots of a fixed stator, and the intense shear that results breaks droplets and particles down to a fine, stable size. It emulsifies oil and water, disperses powders, dissolves gums and homogenizes creams — pumping the product through at the same time. The crevice-free, drainable body cleans in place. Tell us your product and target fineness and we will size the right unit — free, within 24 hours. New to this pump type? Read how a high-shear mixer works.

High-shear mixer FAQs

The questions buyers and engineers ask most before specifying a hygienic high-shear mixer or inline homogenizer.

What is a high-shear mixer?
A high-shear mixer is an inline rotor-stator pump that mixes and refines product as it pumps it. A fast-spinning rotor forces product through the narrow slots of a fixed stator, creating intense shear in a small zone. That shear breaks droplets and particles down to a fine, even size, so the pump emulsifies, disperses and homogenizes in a single pass.
What does a high-shear mixer do?
It does four jobs at once: emulsify — blend oil and water into a stable mix; disperse — wet out and spread powders evenly; dissolve — speed up hydrating gums and stabilizers; and homogenize — cut droplets to a uniform size. Because it is inline, it also moves the product along the line while it works.
How does a high-shear mixer work?
Product enters the center of a spinning rotor and is thrown out through the fine slots of a surrounding stator. In that tiny gap the speed difference is huge, so the fluid is sheared, accelerated and forced to recirculate. Each pass through the rotor-stator “generator” makes the mix finer. Adding rotor-stator rows or stages increases the shear and the fineness.
What is the meaning of high shear?
Shear is the force created when one layer of fluid moves much faster than the layer beside it. “High shear” means that speed difference is very large, as it is in the narrow rotor-stator gap. High shear is what tears droplets apart and breaks up clumped powder, which is how the mixer makes fine, stable emulsions and dispersions.
What is the difference between a homogenizer and a high-shear mixer?
Both reduce droplet size, but by different means. A high-shear rotor-stator mixer uses mechanical shear in a spinning gap and reaches a fineness around 200–300 µm — fast, robust and lower cost. A high-pressure homogenizer forces product through a tiny valve at hundreds of bar and reaches sub-micron sizes, as used for milk or fine pharma emulsions. Choose by the droplet size you actually need.
What is an inline homogenizer?
An inline homogenizer is a rotor-stator unit plumbed into the pipe, so product is homogenized as it flows through rather than being recirculated in a tank. It removes the need for a separate mixing vessel, gives consistent one-pass results, and cleans in place with the rest of the line.
What type of pump is used in a homogenizer?
A rotor-stator (high-shear) pump is the common choice for inline homogenizing in food, dairy and cosmetics. For sub-micron dairy homogenizing, a positive-displacement piston pump feeds a high-pressure homogenizing valve. For most sanitary emulsifying and dispersing duty, the inline rotor-stator unit on this page is the practical answer.
How does a homogenizer pump work?
In a rotor-stator homogenizer the rotor pumps and shears at the same time: it pulls product in, accelerates it, and pushes it through the stator slots where the shear cuts the droplets. The result is a smoother, more stable product and steady inline flow. Throughput and fineness are set by rotor speed, generator geometry and the number of stages.
Single-stage or multistage — which do I need?
A single-stage unit (6–10 rotor-stator rows) handles most emulsifying and dispersing to around 300 µm. A multistage unit (three stages, twelve rows) shears the product again and again in one pass to reach a finer, more stable result near 200 µm, with a larger drive of up to 90 kW. Tell us your target fineness and we will pick the stage count.
What droplet or particle size can it reach?
A sanitary rotor-stator mixer typically reaches roughly 200–300 µm, depending on stages, speed and the product. That suits most sauces, dressings, creams and dispersions. For sub-micron emulsions you would add a high-pressure homogenizer downstream. Share your spec and we will confirm what is realistic.
Can it pump and mix at the same time?
Yes — that is the point of an inline unit. The rotor both shears the product and moves it along the line, so one machine mixes and pumps. For long runs or high back-pressure, we pair it with a feed pump or a recirculation loop.
What can a high-shear mixer make?
Common products are mayonnaise and dressings, sauces and gravies, flavored milk and creams, lotions and cosmetic emulsions, gum and stabilizer solutions, protein slurries and pharma suspensions. Anywhere you need to wet out powder, build an emulsion or smooth a cream, a high-shear mixer does it fast.
Is a high-shear mixer hygienic and CIP-cleanable?
Yes. The wetted parts are 316L — ASME-BPE 1.4435 on aseptic builds — electropolished to Ra ≤ 0.4 µm, with crevice-free, drainable geometry built to 3-A and EHEDG design. It cleans in place with the line, and SIP-rated builds are available for pharma duty.
How quickly can you size and quote one?
Send your product, viscosity, batch or flow rate and target fineness, and we return a sized rotor-stator selection and a budgetary quote within one business day. Supplier-neutral, matched to your recipe, not to one brand.

About sanitary high-shear mixers

A high-shear mixer is an inline rotor-stator machine that mixes and pumps at once. The rotor spins fast inside a fixed stator, and product is forced through the narrow gap between them. The shear in that gap tears droplets apart, breaks up agglomerated powder and refines the mix — so one pass emulsifies, disperses and homogenizes while moving product down the line. More rotor-stator rows, or more stages, mean more shear and a finer result.

Why hygienic processors choose high-shear mixers

They replace slow tank mixing with fast, repeatable inline processing. A single unit wets out powders without lumps, builds stable oil-in-water emulsions, and hydrates gums and stabilizers in minutes rather than hours. The 316L electropolished wetted parts, crevice-free and drainable, meet the requirements of 3-A and EHEDG hygienic design and clean in place with the line.

Matching the mixer to your product

The right selection balances throughput, viscosity, target fineness and your cleaning regime. Single-stage units suit most emulsifying and dispersing; multistage units reach a finer, more stable product; powder-induction builds (PMZX) add and wet out dry ingredients in one step. For sub-micron emulsions, follow the mixer with a high-pressure homogenizer. For simple gentle transfer instead of mixing, compare a rotary lobe pump or a sanitary centrifugal pump. Not sure?
